Sindh is blessed with many natural and man made lakes and water lands which has increased beauty of Sindh. These lakes are main source of water supply. Manchar Lake is one of them. It is located in district Dadu 18 Km away from Sehwan Sharif on Indus River’s west side. In 1930 the Manchar Lake was constructed, while Sukkur barrage was constructed in 1932. It is one of the biggest lake of Asia and largest shallow and fresh water lake in Pakistan. Water in Manchar is collected by numerous tiny water streams in Kirthar Mountains and flows into the Indus River. The total area of lake varies between 350 square kilometers to 520 square kilometers with seasons.
The Manchar and its surrounding areas are the great spots for spending the holidays and picnics. People from different regions of the country come here to visit this lake and enjoy fishing and boating. Live hood of many fishermen depends on water of this lake. Its irrigation water satisfies need of many crops like rice and plants. Number of migratory birds from different parts of world comes here and fly overnight these migratory birds have increased beauty of the lake. Tourists enjoys here while seeing these beautiful birds specially when these birds fly and sit beside the lake. Manchar also gives protection from floods, because water which flows from hill through kheer thar range flow into the Manchar lake. Before construction of the lake in 1917, heavy flood affected these areas than for the short period the extra flows were used to rehabilitate the Manchar Lake. The high levels of pollution would go down in the lake and there would be more fresh water for The “Mohannas” of the region. Lakes like Manchar and Keenjhar has increased beauty of sindh. This area is influenced by nearer sea environment. It consists of large number of salt lakes, channels and tidal creeks, swamps and marshes. During winter when season is dry most of lakes, river dams and creeks become dry or running in shortage of water.
A part from giving beautiful scene beside the lake this beautiful lake is center for tourists where people from inside and outside the country. In summer there is huge number of people every evening enjoying on bank of the lake.
Supply system of Manchar Lake is very strong. There are two main sources of supply from Right Bank to Manchar. Rawat Drain and Dadu Canal ex. Mehar Branch of Rice canal system. It is duty of sindh government to take care of these precious lakes like Keenjhar and the Manchar. Keep safe from pollution and provide facility to tourists as more tourist from overall the world. These places are the assets of sindh and Sindh can generate huge revenue from these places by giving good facilities to tourists. These lakes can give benefit to people of nearer areas by providing them fresh water for drinking and for their crops because water is one of the most important things for daily routine.
