Sindh is known as babul Islam where Islam comes first in subcontinent. It is also called the land of Sufis. There are many Sufis who lived and passed their whole life in Sindh, Hazrat Sachal Sarmast was one of them. He was famous and great poet of Sindh. Sachal Sarmast means “Truthful and intoxicated” was born in 1739 in village known as Daraza sharif near Ranipur district of Khairpur, Sindh. When Sachal Sarmast was very young, his father died and his uncle takes care of him. He married his cousin who died two years later and Sachal Sarmast did not marry again. In his childhood once Sachal went to Shah Abdul latif bhitai another great mystic poet of Sindh, who looked at him and said this little boy will complete what he had started. Sachal Sarmast always preferred silence and solitude. He never went outside from the Daraza sharif (his village). He was very simple in his life style, attitude and eating habits. Yoghurt and soup were his favorites. He slept on a bare wooden bed. He was a humble man with long soft flowing hair, and penetrating eyes. Sachal Sarmast was sufi poet and he was great lover of the music. Sachal Sarmast was “haft zaban”, which means he knew seven languages like Urdu, Balochi , Sindhi, , Saraiki, Punjabi, Persian and Arabic. He was poet of all seven languages. Through poetry he spread message of love for humanity in these languages. He was an ardent follower of Wahdat ul Wujood (unity of existence), an Islamic Philosophy synonymous with Hamah Oost (all from One).
After death of Sachal Sarmast, he was buried in 1829 on the same place and well decorated shrine was made. Where hundreds of his followers come on daily basis and pray for him, spend nights at shrine. His urs is being observed every year in the month of Ramdhan, where Sufis from different areas of Pakistan come here and sing Sufi songs. His beautiful shrine attracts the tourist and people who are in touch with Sufism. Sufi poet Sachal Sarmast has also served Sindhi literature. We can’t ignore his contribution in the literature. Sindh literature is rich with the poems of sachal and sufi songs. His sufi songs are well known in the world. People enjoy his Sufi songs.
Government of sindh seeing contribution of Hazrat Sachal Sarmast has established library with his name Sachal library, which fulfill the academic needs of local people. The library is full of academic books, literature, and other books written by different authors. Here students come for study and research purpose because here variety of books, magazines and newspapers is available that helps them to add valuable material in their research and projects. Recently the library has been shifted to newly established building which is more beautiful and decorated. This new library was also funded by the government of sindh. These libraries and tombs attract people from all the Pakistan to visit sindh because they give a rest to soul and mind.
